The Tretyakov Gallery

In 1986 The All union (since 1994  - All Russian) museum complex “The State Tretyakov Gallery” was established. The history of the museum began however much earlier – in the middle of XIX century. The Tretyakov family bought the house in Lavrushinsky lane in the end of 1851. In 1856 Pavel Mikhailovich bought the first pictures which gave birth to the famous collection. In 1892 he presented his collection to Moscow. The Tretyakov Gallery became first museum of open access in Russia. Today the Tretyakov Gallery in Lavrushinsky lane is a large museum complex.

 In the historical building of the Gallery the exposition of Russian art of XI beginning of XX centuries is introduced. In the Old Russian department one can see the works both of nameless and famous icon-painters of XII-XVII centuries (including Theophanous the Greek, Andrey Rublev, Dionysius). In the halls of XVIII first half of XIX century the works of famous Russian painters, such as F.S. Rokotov, D.G. Levitsky, V.L. Borovikovsky, K.P. Brullov, A.A. Ivanov are shown. Russian realistic art of the second half of XIX century is fully and variously introduced: famous pictures of I.N. Kramskoy, I.E. Repin, V.I. Surikov, I.I. Shishkin, V.M. Vasnetsov, I.I. Levitan and many other painters. In the bright collection of masterpieces of the border of XIX-XX centuries there are works of M.A. Vrubel, V.A. Serov, masters of artistic associations “World of Art”, “Unit of Russian Painters”, “Blue Rose”. 

The special part of exposition is “Treasury” where artistic works of noble metals and precious stones made in XII beginning of XX century are introduced.

The special department of the Gallery is devoted to the demonstration of graphic which does not bear direct bright light that is why halls with soft artificial lighting are created for its demonstration.
