Historical reference: on spacious territories of our region mute witnesses of the centuries passed mounds and ancient settlements have been saved. Vyatichi lived here. They cultivated soil, made crafts and trade. Maybe in IX-XI centuries Tula was already one of the fortified settlements of the proud and independent tribe. Not accidentally the chronicles say that on the place of flowing of the River Tulitsa into the river Upa there is "an ancient settlement".

The first concrete date confirming existence of Tula refers to XII century. Describing military events of 1146 Nikonovskaya chronicle says that prince of Chernigov "Svyatoslav Olgovich goes to Ryazan and visited Mchensk, and Tula and Dubok on the Don..." The name Tula itself is obviously closely connected with the river Tulitsa. V.I. Dal the famous linguist and writer of XIX century explained the word "tula" as "a hidden not available place, zatulie, pritulie for defence."

Tula land is said to be never trampled by enemies. More exactly: since the times Tula Kremlin was founded enemy's leg has never stepped its territory. In 1507 Moscow tsar Vasily III ordered to build "a stone town on Tula". In 1520 the building was finished. The names of the skilful Russian architects – creators of Kremlin are not known nowadays. They managed to show their ancient traditions of Russian architecture in combination with experience of Italian constructors of the Moscow Kremlin. This Kremlin was really built on the "popular" place. Just for the period from 1531 to 1540 Crimean Tatars came to Tula areas 14 times.

In 1712 tsar Peter I established in Tula the first state factory of arm. In 1724 samples of arm were manufactured in Tula factory of arm and the Chamber of rare and perfect arm founded in 1775 by order of Ekaterina II gave birth to the factory museum.

But Tula is famous not just for arm. Tula samovar and Tula gingerbread are also well known all over the world. These are traditional crafts of Tula region as well as accordion manufacture, laces and pastille from Belev and many other things.
